# Subagents

> Built-in specialists the analyst sends out for a noisy research job, then takes back a single brief.

A subagent is a built-in specialist. When a question is bigger than a single lookup, the analyst you are talking to (the parent) can send one out to do the noisy work on its own, then take back a single brief. You do not configure these specialists. The analyst picks one when the job matches.

Use a specialist for a long filing pull, a valuation, a screen, or an ownership sweep. Skip it for a quote or one line on a statement. That only adds a wait.

## How they work

<Columns cols={2}>
  <Card title="A separate workspace">
    Raw pages, multi-year statements, and screener lists stay with the specialist. The parent only sees the brief.
  </Card>

  <Card title="A fresh start">
    The specialist does not see the rest of the chat. The parent writes a self-contained request: tickers, time window, and what to bring back.
  </Card>

  <Card title="Same model">
    It uses the [model](/analyst/models) and reasoning-effort setting you picked, and it shares that turn's usage.
  </Card>

  <Card title="The parent stays in control">
    It can read your notes and use connected [MCP servers](/mcp). Edits and skills stay with the parent, and still go through [approval](/organize/approvals).

## The four specialists

They are organized by mission. None of them is a bull-case or bear-case agent.

You can name the specialist in the question, or put two jobs in one message. There is no `/researcher` trigger. [`/`](/analyst/mentions) is for [skills](/skills) and MCP servers.

## Subagents vs skills

<Columns cols={2}>
  <Card title="Use a specialist">
    A built-in mission for one noisy job: research, valuation, a screen, or ownership. You write nothing; the analyst picks one.
  </Card>

  <Card title="Use a skill" href="/skills">
    A process you wrote and want followed every time, even when the company changes.
  </Card>
</Columns>

A skill can still cause a delegation: <span className="chip-inline chip-skill">{"/earnings-analysis"}</span> on <span className="chip-inline chip-company">{"$NVDA"}</span> is the parent's process. Pulling several years of statements can still go to the Analyst specialist.

<Note>
  You cannot write your own specialist. If you want the analyst to follow your process, [write a skill](/skills#writing-your-own-skill) or [ask the analyst to draft one](/skills#ask-the-analyst-to-write-one).
</Note>

## What you see

A specialist appears as a card labeled **Researcher**, **Analyst**, **Scout**, or **Ownership**. The card opens while it works and collapses when it finishes. Expand it later to inspect the thinking and tool calls. [Stopping](/analyst/chat#managing-conversations) the answer stops the specialist too.
